Does Energy Drinks Cause Excessive Drinking?

Students at Middlebury College in Vermont should save their energy, because the college just banned energy drinks. They recently decided to ban energy drinks, because they believe that it causes excessive drinking and risky sex. Scientists have also found a connection between drinking energy drinks with the consumption of alcohol.
Dan Detora, executive director of dining hall services agrees with the ban. He stated to NBC News, "I see it as the equivalent of banning cigarettes" (Autonomous Nonprofit Organization, 2016). Detora also stated how the drinks have been linked to cardiovascular events, seizures, and liver damage (James, 2016). Middlebury College’s dining have also released informative flyers that discuss how energy drinks can lead to other alcoholic drinks, and drunk driving. In other words, the college views energy drinks as a gateway drug. Energy drinks can also cause periods of sleepiness, which can cause stress and unhealthy study habits.
Many people at Middlebury might agree with this ban, but many students don't. Arnav Adhikari, a 22-year-old senior from India who works at the cafe said, “he used to sell "loads" of the drinks, and the college is overreaching its role" (James, 2016). He also added, "They still sell lots of fried food", which is bad for people's health (James, 2016). Many students also believe that the college should worry about other important issues instead of interfering with other people's lives.
Energy drinks may lead to excessive drinking, but that argument can be used for any drink. Sales of energy drinks will be banned at the college by March 7, so college student’s better stock up. How do you feel about the situation? Is it right what the college is doing, or should Middlebury College be worrying about other important issues?

  1. I don't think that it is the colleges job to restrict the sale of energy drink. I don't think it is on the same level as smoke free campus because other peoples health can be negatively effected because people are smoking around them.

  3. I agree that the college should not ban or restrict selling energy drinks but from personal experience I know a lot of people that drink energy drinks before going out and as well as with alcohol. Knowing that there are bad side effects of energy drinks as well as alcohol, combining them can be very dangerous.

  4. I didnt know that energy drinks caused excessive alcohol consumption, but now that i think about it i can see how that may happen. Many people drink energy drinks with their alcohol. I dont think that the college should ban the drinks, just because people are going to drink alcohol anyway, but this is interesting information to know about.

  5. This was interesting post, I never thought that a school could shut down the sales of certain drink like that. I think it is a bit extreme for the school to ban it, but it is kind of understandable if they are having problems with students and excessive drinking and poor behavior. Something has to give if there have been too many problems because of alcohol or beverages that enhance it.

  8. I agree with the college banning the drinks- only because they are unhealthy and dangerous to your heart. I do not see how energy drinks are linked to excessive drinking of alcohol and connecting it to risky sex behavior is even more of a stretch.

  11. I hate energy drinks so much. It is crazy to think they can cause excessive drinking though. This is very informative to the college students who like to mix the two. I understand how they can lead to excessive drinking because they mask the alcohol, so one does not know they have consumed too much. This was a good post!

  12. This was such a well written, and informative post. All college students binge drink to begin with, and adding energy drinks is just making everything worse.I think people my age, and in coming freshman should really take a look at this.

  14. I don't like energy drinks because of all the sugars in them and how jittery they make me feel. I think that the college that banned them made the right decision. I know many people use them when they stay up late to study but I have learned from experience that they usually end up back firing on me and make me crash after a short burst of energy.
